The spontaneous dry eyes are noted in some aged monkeys. Schirmer test, breakup time of tear film, corneal fluorescence staining, tarsal gland examination can be used to evaluate the severity of dry eyes and the efficacy of drugs.
Criteria | Incidence | Explanations |
Schirmer I test≤5 mm AND FBUT≤5 mm/min | 8 /63 (16 %) without topical anesthesia 14/68 (20.6 %) with topical anesthesia | 16% to 20% of aged monkeys had possible dry eyes, when use human criteria as cutoff line. |
Schirmer Ⅰ test ≤2 mm | 2/220 (0.9%) | possible aqueous tear deficiency |
Schirmer Ⅰ 5~10 mm and FBUT≤5 s | 51/220 (23%) | possible lipid deficiency |
